Welcome to Ben Lee's Studio

“Beauty is always associated with art. It enriches our lives, creating a subtle but important influence. I began drawing at an early age at my father's Art Institution in Hong Kong. Later I attended the Vancouver School of Fine Art in the mid 50's. During the course of my life, I have been involved with many artistic endeavours, but it was not until my retirement in Toronto that I concentrated on fine art in the watercolour medium.”

“I have since established my own studio, taught classes, organized out -door excursions and compiled an instructional guide-book for students. Regular paint-in gatherings, conducting workshops and demos are some of the activities I enjoy with fellow artists. Recently I published a 100-page book representing some of my artwork.”

“Taking inspiration from old masters, I continue to explore an ever-expanding world of art. I am grateful for the inspiration and fellowship my art gives to me, for the gift of visual expression reflecting a sense of creativity through vivid colours and bold strokes and capturing the wonders of nature and life.”

Abstract Artwork

Group of Seven

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.

Landscape & Landmarks Artwork

South Eastern Chinese Village

Landscape art depicts scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather usually is an element of the composition. The word landscape is from the Dutch, landschap meaning a sheaf, a patch of cultivated ground. The word entered the English vocabulary of the connoisseur in the late 17th century.

Nudes & Figures Artwork

Nude Statues at Louvre, Paris

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face or body and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in art a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position.

Still Lifes Artwork

Gas Lamp

A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting.

Floral Artwork

Untitled 1

Floral and botanical artworks range in style from bouquets of wide open blooms, to wild abstract and surreal art composed of smatterings of color suggestive of buds. Watercolor works exceptionally well, lending itself to blurred lines and muted colors, and is especially appropriate for painting natural subjects. Its delicate transparancy is well suited to images of equally delicate, transparant petals and leaves.
